Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to Common Questions About Our Driving Evaluations, Process, and Patient Support

Our FAQ section provides clear answers about who we work with, what conditions may require an evaluation, and what to expect during the process. We explain how evaluations are conducted, the options for adaptive equipment training, home-based assessments, and next steps if driving isn’t safe—all designed to help you make informed decisions and maintain independence.

  • Call 479-790-8347 to schedule your evaluation.

  • We work with experienced drivers who have recovered from a medical condition or injury that may impact driving ability.

  • Common reasons include:

    • Stroke

    • Brain injury

    • Neurological conditions

    • Orthopedic injuries

    • Vision changes

    • Aging-related concerns

  • If you need to cancel or reschedule, please give at least 48 hours' notice — we block off several hours for each appointment, and late cancellations will result in a $50 fee billed directly to you.

For home evaluations, it's important that you're able to focus without interruption. We ask that family members and pets stay out of the way during the evaluation itself. That said, we'll set aside time at the start for family members to share any concerns or input — their perspective matters, and we want to hear it.

  • Item Before getting behind the wheel, you'll need to have the following ready:

    • A valid driver's license

    • A physician referral for an "OT driving evaluation and treatment" — this gives us permission to evaluate you and is especially important if you're recovering from a medical condition, injury, or experiencing cognitive changes

    • Completed intake forms and signed paperwork

    • Payment (cash only)

If your license is currently suspended, we'll need to reach out to your state licensing agency before moving forward.

One more thing worth knowing: the DMV holds full authority over your driver's license, and there are times we may be required to submit reports to them. If that ever applies to you, we'll always talk it through with you first — no surprises.

  • Yes. We offer training with hand controls, left foot accelerators, pedal extensions, and steering devices in our modified driver rehab vehicle — helping you build the skills and confidence to drive safely with the equipment that fits your needs.

  • The process includes a clinical assessment, an on-road assessment (if appropriate), and a detailed discussion of results and recommendations.

  • Length varies depending on individual needs, but comprehensive evaluations typically take several hours.

  • It varies — some people find their footing in a few sessions, others may need a few weeks depending on their needs. After your evaluation, we'll map out a training plan together.

We also provide support through your state's adaptive equipment licensing process, which may include paperwork and a road test at the DMV. Depending on your state, this process can take several weeks. And when it comes to equipment, we'll help you find a vendor, select and prescribe what fits you best, and make sure everything is properly installed and working well in your vehicle.

  • The on-road evaluation takes place in our driver rehab vehicle, which is equipped with specialized safety equipment — and doubles as your test vehicle if the DMV requires a road test.

We know driving an unfamiliar car takes adjustment, so we'll start by giving you time to get comfortable before the evaluation begins. From there, we'll ease in with familiar routes in your community, then gradually introduce less familiar roads as you build confidence.

  • We approach this with empathy and honesty. If driving is not safe, we will help identify alternative transportation options in your community so you can maintain independence.

  • Yes. We offer home-based evaluations for your convenience.

  • Payment is due at the time of service — cash only. Drive Mastery LLC is a private practice and does not bill insurance directly. If your plan covers this service, we're happy to provide a copy of your evaluation report for you to submit your own claim. Just keep in mind that filing with your insurance is your responsibility.

  • Progressive conditions often mean good days and bad days, which can lead to inconsistent results. Because of this, several sessions may be needed to establish a reliable pattern before we can draw conclusions. From there, we'll work together to build an individualized plan that reflects where you are and where you're headed.

  • We'll assess sensory and motor function, foot-eye coordination, and any ergonomic needs. Based on those findings, we'll recommend appropriate adaptations and discuss any specialized equipment — particularly for vision — that may support safer, more independent driving.
